Many of the students in my classes struggle with reading. They work diligently every day in an attempt to achieve grade-level reading skills. This is made even more difficult by the conditions in which they live.
Students who have low levels of reading don't enjoy the process of reading and the struggle continues.
My goal, as a Language Arts teacher, is to not only help my students achieve grade-level reading skills but also to help them develop a love of reading.
My Project
These past few years have been nothing short of challenging for teachers as well as students. The pandemic has caused students all across the world to struggle not only with academics, but with mental health. When schools first shut down, teachers and students had to quickly adjust their entire way of teaching and learning. A few days after the shut down we had an earthquake, causing even more stress and anxiety for our learners. Giving back is one of the many ways I am able to keep my mental health in check. My hope is that I can teach my students that giving back can help us feel good, while helping others. I hope to use the supplies being requested in this project to give back. My students have been blessed by so many donors and kind individuals that we want to create care packages and donate them to an elementary school. We hope that these care packages will bring some smiles to younger learners and will give them hope for a happier future. We are asking for a variety of cellophane bags to fill with yummy treats for the children to enjoy. We will be filling the drawstring bags a well as the reusable tote bags with fun activities and art projects that we have already had donated. The sheets being requested in this project will be used to make quilts that will also be donated to an elementary school for students who might need a little extra love. Finally I am asking for an air purifier to help keep us safe from germs that might be in the air. I have also requested extra filters to keep us going through the rest of the school year.
