This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I call myself the "happiest teacher at the best school in Texas"! and even though our students are highest poverty, every day they come to learn with smiles on their faces and a voracious hunger for knowledge!

I want to fund a "newcomer to the country" hygiene, etiquette and customs as an after school series of workshops.

Language Center kids are usually classified as having been "unschooled" meaning our classroom may be the first they have experienced. They step off the plane and into our school sometimes hours after having arrived in our city -having to learn how to navigate not only a foreign country but a new language and completely new customs. All have lived in horrific conditions.

Personal hygiene, operating machines, interviewing are new to them . Most come with someone who is suppose to help but quickly loses interest. Unfortunately they can become targets for exclusion by schoolmates. It is because of this that we not only find ourselves teaching what is expected (reading and math) but filling the gaps socially so that our students can become American first generation scholastic and citizen success stories.

My Project

My project would teach our Language Center refugee and immigrant families how to better assimilate to their new home. Things we take for granted like currency and using washing machines can be frustrating. Hygiene is a thing that can cause these students to be ostracized from our general students and can be the difference in a parent getting a job. I want to make a series of workshops not currently available that would teach our newcomers how to prepare food, supplies for personal grooming, simple household machinery etc. These workshops can not happen without the supplies I am asking for.
