Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in East Oakland. Students are primarily from low-income immigrant families and are highly motivated to achieve.
The majority of our students are English language learners from immigrant households.
Their families are from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the U.S. They are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.
My Project
In order to give girls more access to the outdoors, we started a Girls Discover the Outdoors club where girls and gender expansive youth can build their leadership skills, practice team building, and learn about themselves while learning about the outdoors. We go on weekend and after school field trips 1-2 times a month. This year, we are also incorporating more environmental education and environmental stewardship in the program.
We hope that these fleece jackets, in addition to being necessities for the winter time and for activities like hiking, snowshoeing, and camping, will help build a sense of solidarity and group identity among the students in our group.
Many of our students do not have the warm gear they need in order to comfortably get to and from school. And at times it is even a deterrent for some students to participate at recess. These jackets will get our girls prepared for both our fall and winter activities and for the walk to school everyday.
