HHS has a variety of different students who bring unique experiences, strengths and ideas to our school. Within our school environment we have about ten percent of our youth who are foster children and another large percentage are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. As a Social Worker working in a public secondary school in Wichita, I work directly with students and families from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Due to various environmental factors beyond their control, many of my students find themselves without the most basic of clothing and hygiene items. Clean, warm clothing is a luxury that many of my students do not take for granted.
Poverty, homelessness, and lack of access to basic resources directly impacts a student’s readiness to learn.
By providing students with a change of warm clothes and socks, we can help to alleviate one environmental barrier to learning.
My Project
I am needing help to create a clothing closet for my students in need! I envision a space where students have the ability to choose warm-weather items in a way that feels dignified to them. I am asking for a variety of t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants for my 9th-12th grade students. By donating to my project, you will not only help meet the physical needs of some of my most vulnerable students, but you will also provide them with the added confidence that they deserve.
Warm clothes for students will help provide students a sense of belonging and help create relationships that are strong within the school.
