My Students
My classroom is in a low-income neighborhood and houses a group of bright and talented little learners. Most of our students come from low-income housing and households that have more than one child. This makes it difficult for families to provide more than the basic needs of life.
Our students are eager to learn and look forward to coming to school.
They welcome and embrace new and exciting learning opportunities. They step up to challenges with smiles on their eager faces.
My Project
It's hard to learn when you are cold or wearing unclean clothing. Oftentimes, we as educators take the simple things for granted. We think and believe that all households have the basic necessities, clean underwear, warm hats, extra shirts, gloves and socks. When that isn't the case. In some families the focus is on maintaining a roof over their heads and food on the table.
I want my students to know that we are able to meet their needs if they are in need of extra clothing, warm hats and gloves.
Being a kid is about enjoying life and learning all that you can. Kids shouldn't be worried about adult choices if there is no need to. School should be a safe place where they can expect to feel loved and appreciated while learning and playing with friends. Some students also know that school is where they can get two full meals, a snack and rest comfortably, and that is a great thing.
Having extra socks, underwear, shirts, hats and gloves on hand as needed is both beneficial to families and to educators.
