I teach students in the 8th to 12th grade with a range of cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities in the junior high and high school self-contained classroom. With the help of the high school counselor and my paraprofessionals, we strive to teach our students life skills that will transition over to their own personal life and work after high school. It takes a collaborative approach to meet all of the needs of each student in my class.
All of my students participate in a transition program we have started this year that works closely with students in the resource special education classroom and general education students to provide a laundry service to underprivileged students, athletes, and catering events.
Our laundry service is called Squeaky Clean Janitorial Services, where we practice sorting clothes into lights and dark's, measurement of soap and detergent, and proper cleaning of certain materials. We also work closely with students on how to properly dry clothing so it does not shrink, and folding of clothes as well. Next year, we would like to expand our services to other sports across campus and possibly other underprivileged students across our district.
My Project
This project will allow my students to work at learning post secondary life skills while still attending high school. By providing the students with a new washer and dryer they will be able to wash their own or other non privileged students clothing. They will also have the opportunity to wash sports uniforms more frequently for multiple buildings in our district.
By washing and wearing clean clothing to school on a daily basis my students and others in the school will build their self-confidence.
Also, by seeing the athletes wearing their uniforms that my students helped wash will build a sense of pride in the services that they are able to provide to others helping overcome their handicapping conditions and disabilities.
