Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Mrs. L! I need more black paper for the roof! Mrs. L! I need more orange to cut a pumpkin! Mrs L! We're short red --need 4 more for the rest of the class!" These are common requests in my art room. But in my case, I have had to say "Sorry! I don't have any more, how about green or gray?"
Our art room, located in the basement of a 100+ year old urban brick building, serves more than 700 students every week, grades K-8.
For many children there are no scissors, markers or paper at home; this is their only outlet or chance to try being creative. Each week they enter, excited, to find out what we will be doing that day. With 700+ students cycling through the room each week, supplies are used up quickly. It is heartbreaking to only be able to provide donated computer paper or leftovers from neighborhood businesses or only the right color for half of the class. All of our students deserve construction paper of all colors! My school art budget this year is only $100.00. I have been able to order 3 reams of white paper, 4 scissors, and a box of crayons; that's 2 sheets of white paper for the year for each child! The children deserve so much more!
My Project
Providing basics such as construction paper reassures children that they are worthy of decent art supplies. With so much lacking in the lives of many students, an opportunity to try new materials is something they look forward to. In the art room they learn to try, to not give up, to develop self confidence, how to manage themselves and their materials among their peers. As a teacher, nothing is as exciting as the happy yelps of children being able to choose the color of paper they want to work with!
For most children and adults, color elicits all kinds of emotions. Bright colors engage the children and excite them. From cutting bright red circles as a kindergartener to tearing appropriate colors in a paper portrait collage, students will be able to jump into age appropriate, challenging projects. With colored paper, students can actually cut green shamrocks and red hearts! Purple is pretty but 'real' valentines are red!
This year the art budget only provides 2 sheets of white paper per student.
We're out of yellow, red, blue, orange gray and purple. After several years of minimal budgeting consumables are almost gone. Students are left with no options. With the gift of multiple colors plus white, children will be open to a huge variety of art projects. The impact of funding this project is huge. It is the difference between using copy paper if it is available, or scrap paper and actually doing art.
