Fourth grade is always an adventure! We never know where our learning will take us. In our room, we're always looking for ways to meet the learning styles of kinesthetic, visual, audio, and logical learning. By the end of the school year, I want my students to see the value of learning something new and embrace the love of lifelong learning.
Our class is made up of 23 kind, creative students who are eager to learn new material.
This year, my students have really worked towards persevering through difficult tasks. This is our favorite quote: "Be like a postage stamp, stick to something until you get there!" -Josh Billings.
My Project
We are excited to explore different genres of literature. Part of the Common Core Curriculum is for students to be exposed to a variety of literary texts. I would like to make this a wonderful time when students will learn to love books. Each week, we will focus on a different genre. For my Donors Choose project, I asked for books we will use for the book talks. Some of the genres I focused on include realistic fiction, social studies texts, tall tales, historical fiction, and literary poems. We are excited to use these books for a once a week book talk. We will read the book as a class. Then, I will lead a discussion that will include what the specific feature of the book was that qualified it as a specific genre.
These books will launch us into a year of literary exploration!
Throughout the year, we will be also be preparing a slide show on the different genres we explore. In each slide, students will be required to include a picture of the class reading the book, the books name and author, a quick synopsis of the book, the genre, and the features of the genre. Throughout the year, we will review our ongoing list of genres, and, as we encounter new prose, poetry, or dramas, identify the genre.
It is important for students to be familiar with a wide range of genres
