Our elementary school is a richly diverse elementary school with a variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds. There are 299 students in our school. We are a Title I school with 60% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school's population consists of 23% Hispanic, 28% African American, 41% Caucasian, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 5% of our population is two or more races. Most of our children live in apartments in single-parent households.
Our building is a three-story historical building.
We just celebrated our 75th anniversary. Our building was constructed during Franklin D. Roosevelt's terms. We have two sections at every grade level. We have five co-teaching classrooms as well as two 8:1:2 classrooms which specialize in children with behavioral difficulties.
We consider the students in our school to be special due to their diverse cultures and backgrounds. They bring multiple perspectives to our classroom communities. Due to a lack of resources for many of our students, they are not able to obtain many educational experiences outside of the school.
My Project
Calling all Kindergarten Manipulatives! Everyone knows learning math using manipulatives is so much fun and students learn best using manipulatives. What better way to bring math alive!
By adding various ten frame manipulatives and addition and subtraction game options will allow my kindergarten students to master several skills: building number sense, comparing numbers, adding and subtracting to 10 and grouping numbers.
These math skills are extremely important because they are foundational skills needed to access concepts across all grade levels. These hands on manipulatives will help them master these skills through exciting hands on games with their peers. My kindergarten students will be ready for first grade!
