Our elementary school is a richly diverse elementary school with a variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds. There are 299 students in our school. We are a Title I school with 60% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school's population consists of 23% Hispanic, 28% African American, 41% Caucasian, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 5% of our population is two or more races. Most of our children live in apartments in single-parent households.
Our building is a three-story historical building.
We just celebrated our 75th anniversary. Our building was constructed during Franklin D. Roosevelt's terms. We have two sections at every grade level. We have five co-teaching classrooms as well as two 8:1:2 classrooms which specialize in children with behavioral difficulties.
We consider the students in our school to be special due to their diverse cultures and backgrounds. They bring multiple perspectives to our classroom communities. Due to a lack of resources for many of our students, they are not able to obtain many educational experiences outside of the school.
My Project
Several of my fourth grade students still struggle with mastering basic skills. These skills are essential in order to access fourth and even fifth grade math concepts.
My students would greatly benefit from place value manipulatives.
These manipulatives will allow them to visualize place value, develop a better understanding of expanded form and help with comparing numbers. The fraction manipulatives will help them visualize fractions and develop a better understanding of the concepts numerator and denominator. Also, the fraction manipulatives will help aide in comparing and finding equivalent fractions. By strengthening their addition and subtraction skills through game opportunities will make learning multiplication easier. In addition, my students would benefit from capacity manipulatives. When I say the words: cups, pints, quarts gallons, my students have difficulty visualizing each item and then trying to convert it into the next unit. Lastly, many of my students still struggle with coin identification, counting mixed money amounts and engaging in pretend shopping experiences.
All of these manipulatives will help them master many skills through exciting hands on games and opportunities with their peers!
