My students need academic books that can grab their attention; “Fahrenheit 451” will draw them in and make them want to know more.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are disadvantaged. Most of them come from environments with generational poverty and no sense of the opportunities that education can provide. They are mostly non-readers or reluctant readers--that is why finding engaging books with profound messages is so important.
Fahrenheit 451 will introduce them to a world where it is illegal to read books and challenge them to think about the consequences of an illiterate or uninformed society.
My hope is to decrease the overwhelmingly high percentage of students who balk at the idea of reading.
My Project
I would like a class copy of Fahrenheit 451 so that my students can question their stance on reading. Most of my students do not see the point in books--especially because they are surrounded by technology and so many entertainment platforms. My hope is that possibly seeing themselves reflected in a book written decades ago will make them question whether or not the book was prophetic as well as whether or not the prophecy is inherently bad.
In addition to raising the question of whether or not technology contributes to society in positive ways, reading this book will also raise many pertinent topics such as whether or not society values the lives of youths such as them.
