I taught the Odyssey to a class of English language learners last year. The students were engaged because we read the graphic novel by Gareth Hinds instead of a longer, more-traditional translation. I no longer teach at the school where the graphic novel is available; however, I still want my students to explore classical literature in a way that is accessible to them. The Odyssey will improve my students' literacy and critical thinking skills as well as their knowledge of literary elements and classical literature. Not only will this book be used as a way to introduce students to classical literature, but it will also pair with the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The combination of this book with this particular movie offers several engaging ways to meet a plethora of Common Core State Standards.
