My Students

If we could just read the words, and know what they mean - we would be soaring with success! Without a fun, hands-on approach to vocabulary, it is not anything the students want to learn about. Without knowledge of vocabulary, how will students learn the material?

I am a proud teacher of about 70 - 6th grade History students.

The majority of my students are from low income homes. I teach in a high poverty, urban community. A majority of the students at our school are on free and reduced lunches. I am also teaching inclusion classrooms. Therefore, I have several students with special needs.

My Project

These resources would become a huge aspect of our classroom. These supplies would be used to create a very large, very interactive word wall. I want my classroom to be covered with words, names, definitions and pictures relating to United States History. With this board, students would be able to manipulate the vocabulary and relate to it on an interactive level. I strongly believe that getting the students out of their seats and getting manipulatives in their hands makes learning a much more enjoyable experience for the students and the teacher. The word wall would reflect the students latest vocabulary and each day students that finish any work and their bell work early would be able to work with vocabulary. Pictures, words, and definitions of the latest terms would be reflected on the wall. It is an enriching activity as well as it gives a chance for students to refresh on past concepts.

This project is very important to me because it would give my students an activity that is meaningful, as well as enjoyable.

I don't believe that students should be sitting in their seats all day, reading from books, filling out worksheets, or listening to the teacher lecture. I want them to have the opportunity to see each concept of U.S. History in a fun, interactive way. This board would allow just that!
