Each grade level uses a walk to read model where every student is grouped according to the phonics skills they need to learn. We move all of the students into groups of 6 or fewer. They need materials waiting for them with their teacher. These pocket folders will be assigned to every student to house their reading intervention materials. Students with disabilities related to reading are placed in the smallest groups in order to get more attention and practice.
Students can move between groups as they learn at different rates and we will easily be able to move student work between teachers.
My reading intervention team will assemble all the materials needed for the year depending upon each child's level. Every year, we have many kindergarteners who are ready to read and a smaller subset who cannot yet hold a pencil, don't know any letters, and cannot yet spell their names. This group needs special instruction in small groups where they have many repeated practice opportunities. We love to reward hard work with a practice using a special tool such as an LCD screen or magnetic drawing board. These novelty items allow us to give more practice on the same targeted skill but it feels new to the students.
