Our garden club is taking the lead on reducing our cafeteria trash and turning food waste into \"gold.\" First, they put together the outside compost bin and the wheelbarrow. These students enjoyed collaboratively working on a challenge to benefit the school. We smashed pumpkins leftover from the school's Harvest Festival to start off the composting bin in combination with leaves raked off the sidewalks. This is a great combination of carbon rich and nitrogen rich material. \r\n\r\nThe garden club adopted the worm composting bin. These students collect food scraps in old plastic containers containers at lunch and snack time and then feed the worms weekly on Wednesday mornings. The vermicomposting bin rests on a cart in the basement of the school to protect the worms from the variable temperatures outside. By now, they know what to do with the worms independently. We are preparing presentations they can give to other classes on worm bodies, how worms help soil, what they like to eat or not eat, the word \"decompose,\" etc.\r\n\r\nWe are in the middle of reading Worms Eat My Garbage. Students are taking notes in their quarter-sized Garden Notebooks. They practice making observations of the worm bin, illustrating one worm, labeling body parts such as segments, saddle, head, and tail. They've made contrastive lists of the types of foods the worms like and don't like to eat.\r\n\r\nNext semester, these third - fifth grade students will take their knowledge on the road to other classes with a focus on science standards. There they will present the worm bin and explain how the worms work so others can see decomposition in action. We will also invite classes to check out the outside tumbling compost bins. Ultimately, the staff want all students to be able to explain how the the sun's energy cycles through ecosystems from producers through consumers and back into the nutrient pool through decomposers. Our garden club students are leading the school with this knowledge.\r\n\r\nRight now we have two layers of the worm bin active. Red wigglers can double their population every 60 days. As our worm population grows and we increase worm composting up to five layers in the bin. We continue to add food scraps, mixed with leaves from our sidewalk clean up, to the tumbling compost bins. We'll be able to measure a significant reduction in food scraps from our cafeteria. We'll check in on the progress in our outdoor compost bin in late April at our garden clean up day where we will add compost to our new plantings.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your contributions.","fullyFundedDate":1746210229476,"projectUrl":"project/cafeteria-waste-turned-to-gold/9299954/","projectTitle":"Cafeteria Waste Turned to Gold","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cadwallader","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/287423"},{"teacherId":8426769,"projectId":9335746,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations which allowed me to give such sweet graduation gifts to our fifth graders at the end of the 2024-2025 school year! Your donation has made a meaningful difference in our classroom and has brought joy, excitement, and motivation to my students as they continue to develop their love of reading.\r\n\r\nWith the new resources, my students have been thrilled to pair their independent reading with a special snack. I usually let them choose whether they want their snack while they read or after they finish—and most of them choose to use it as an incentive. They love the element of surprise, and I've kept things interesting by switching up the snacks each week. One week it might be fruit snacks, the next it's pop chips. Watching their faces light up as they discover the new treat for the week has become a highlight for all of us. It's such a simple thing, but it has such a powerful impact—encouraging them to read, share what they've read, and stay engaged.\r\n\r\nOne moment that really stood out was when a group of students excitedly finished their books and started animatedly discussing their favorite parts with each other, all while snacking on a surprise treat. It created a cozy, book-club-like atmosphere right in our classroom. These little moments are what build a positive reading culture.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're approaching the finish line of our 100-book challenge. Despite the upcoming state testing, my students are still pushing hard, motivated to meet their goal. Many of them enjoy discussing their books aloud, both with peers and with me, and it's incredible to see their growth in vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language skills.\r\n\r\nAs we look ahead, we're planning a big celebration at the end of May to honor our success—and to kick off our summer reading bingo incentive project.
