Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students range from seventh to eighth graders. We are a diverse population with students from many different cultural backgrounds. Our school is a Title I-funded school, with most families socioeconomically disadvantaged. This means that most of our students receive free or reduced-cost lunch.

In 2017, 2019, and 2020, our school and community faced devastating smoke and fires in Sonoma County and even within the city limits, and now they are surviving a global pandemic.

Many of our students and staff lost their homes due to the fires, many of us have had mandatory evacuations, and many have lost family members due to COVID-19. I will be getting students every year for the next decade who have survived these four traumatic experiences.

Students need to feel safe and secure at their school. It is their second home. Our community is filled with kind, giving students who deserve a little goodness from kind people like you.

My Project

These days, people seem to be so divided. You're either Republican or Democrat, black or white, vaccinated or anti-mask. How can we get back to being civil again? One way is to walk in another person's shoes for a bit. See what another person's life is like before we judge how they live.

Reading A Long Walk to Water will help students see how others in the world live, and help them become more empathetic.

The New York Times bestseller begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about two eleven-year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hour's walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, Salva, becomes one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya's in an astonishing and moving way.
