I am an 8th grade English teacher in a school that serves approximately 750 students in a rural county in North Carolina. I am teaching the generation of students that America has called the most obese. My school provides middle school students 15 minutes of "recess" time each day. Our students do not have playground equipment and we encourage students to walk laps around the baseball and softball fields so they are physically active during this time. I would like to provide students with pedometers to record their miles and give them goals to reach. Although I have 108 students I am only asking for 10 pedometers because students will walk in groups. Our students could easily attain status in the 50 or 100-mile club. I would also like to give them a t-shirts marking their accomplishments.
Studies show that active students do better in school, have less health problems and better self-esteem. Physically active students are also more likely to carry good habits into adulthood and be healthy, productive members of our community.
