Wake Up, Read, Sleep, Repeat Part II

My students need 22 books that will reach my less enthusiastic readers.

This project is fully funded

I teach in a rural area outside of a city. My students are mostly minority. The level of parental education is low but on the rise as our area develops. I am concerned about my students being able to keep up in this ever changing world

Each year in the United States our minority students score lower on reading tests than their white peers. "Why do you think that is?" I asked my students. "Because there is nothing good for us to read," they told me. It can be challenging to get students to read on their own. Especially when they don't see themselves on the cover or in the story line.

I would like books for my classroom library that reflect my students lives and interests. I believe that giving them something that they want to read will lead to better reading skills and they will have a better chance of tackling the academic reading that they need to be successful in school and someday on the job.

Reaching out to these students with this literature can be a stepping stone to improving all of their reading and academic skills. Be a part of their first steps on their on going journey to become educated citizens of the community.
