Help me give my students a Bookworm Vending machine and tokens for a positive way to bring engagement and excitement into reading books and practicing good character!
I work daily with individuals and small groups on developing character, solving conflicts, and helping them to become the best versions of themselves. I often use picture books as a tool for teaching expectations, character education, and diversity. Our school utilizes PBIS (Positive Intervention Reward System) as a way to recognize our students for demonstrating our core values of responsibility and respect for yourself and others.
I work in a high-poverty Pre-k through 1st-grade building.
For many of our students, the first time they pick up a book is in our classrooms. My favorite quote by Frank Serafini is "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." It is so important to foster a love of reading and lifelong learning. Many of our students do not have reading materials at home. By providing a book vending machine with diverse books, we can encourage kids to learn, grow and develop their reading skills as well as develop good character and cultural awareness.
My Project
The books in the vending machine will include books selected for our diverse population, help promote literacy and character education and give students an additional way to be recognized.
Putting books in the hands of our children is the key to promoting a lifelong love of learning.
Our kids have opportunities to check out books from the library or read them from the teacher's classroom selection. These books will belong to the child and will also help grow their home library and give parents the opportunity to help foster that love.
