My Students

I teach students in a self-contained, multi-age, community-based/ life skills program. They are students who are identified as having developmental disabilities and are evaluated by the New York State Alternate Assessment. My students, many of whom are individuals with autism, describe themselves as “different not less.” They are curious learners with many atypical strengths that bring rich diversity to our learning community. Beginning in 11th grade they participate in a school to work program, so half the school day is spent outside the building.

My Project

Students will use virtual reality to document the oral history and the natural history of our county and make their artifacts available to the community in creative ways using Google Expedition.

They will use the devices acquired through this grant and other learning technology to capture and catalog the history of important locations they visit in Dutchess County.

Students will share animated stories based on interviews they conduct with senior citizens and local experts. They will make connections and conduct additional research to support their learning in their literature, social studies, science and current affairs classes.

Our classes will curate their learning and experiences and set up virtual field trips for other students in the district.
