Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Voyagers want to "see the world"!!! I am the Academically Gifted Teacher at my elementary school, home of the Voyagers, but I have also taken on the role of geography coach for the past two years. In this role, I teach 4th and 5th graders who come from all areas of our diverse student population of a Title I school.

We are atlas poor! We have been using the few, mismatched, and outdated atlases at our school for the last two years. I began using them to prepare my interested students for the National Geography Bee, and this year the interest was so great that the students asked if we could make the sessions year-round, rather than just until the Geography Bee in December each year! Thus, we now have a "GeoClub" that meets each week, once for the 4th graders and once for the 5th graders. As you can imagine, I am thrilled with this enthusiasm but feel even more ill-equipped to meet our geography needs. I also love the "Fact Finder" as yet another, alternative means of expanding the students' knowledge base.

We need resources! Our main need is matching sets of student atlases. We need one set that focuses on the dynamics of the United States, and another that provides in-depth information about the countries of the world. We will use these for reference, as our "anchor" as we study each week. The "Fact Finder" game offers an enticing alternative for acquiring knowledge.

Help my students feed their love of geography! This is a voluntary club and I want to see the students' interest and knowledge soar! We just need more resources to further these Voyagers' aspirations!
