This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an energetic, inquisitive and enthusiastic group of twenty-six 7- and 8-year-olds in the inner city of Providence, Rhode Island. They are always eager to come to school and love to read, write and problem solve in such thoughtful and creative ways! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class. We learn from each other. My school is working hard to build community among families and staff and we have a safe, respectful environment.

My Project

I am completely amazed and inspired by the Ada Lace Adventures chapter book series by Emily Calandrelli. This series features a 3rd grader, Ada Lace, who loves science and technology. She works with her new best friend Nina to tackle challenges and mysteries in her own life. In 2018 “Ada Lace Sees Red” was selected as one of the “Best STEM Books for Kids” by the National Science Teachers Association. It was then that I discovered the series and after reading each one to my own children I decided they would be wonderful books to study, discuss, and have in the classroom to enhance the STEM rich curriculum I am working hard to bring to my students. I am requesting 8 copies of each of the first three books in the series which I plan on teaching in a book club style where we fully interact with the text and create several extension activities such as designing bookmarks and creating mini dramatizations of each chapter. We will also write our ideas and reflections in special Ada Lace Journals we create together if we are fortunate enough to be funded. Thank you so much for your time and any and all help is appreciated.
