When I first introduced the new materials to my students, they were so excited to have something new in their hands and even more excited that they could practice the specific letters we are working on in class. \r\n\r\nMy students have gained confidence in their writing of individual letters because they are able to practice in a fun way with a practice card of the letters they want to work on, the magnetic board, and a magnetic pen. I have the whole alphabet cards and the letter cards we have been working on available to use with the magnetic boards as an option to use in the writing center during small group reading rotations. New letter cards will be added to what is available as we learn new letters in the upcoming weeks.\r\n\r\nIn small group reading time, I use some of the materials to give my students practice with identifying first sounds in pictures in a game format, having the students identify the first letter sound in a word, write the letter that goes with it, then find and match other pictures of objects with the same letter sound. As the year goes on, I will work with the students to identify all of the letter sounds in the pictures and guide them to write these words. Having these reading and writing materials gives me the opportunity to reinforce and extend the learning we are already doing. Then we had to write and make cards for one of our students Joel who had his appendix removed. Next we had to write thank you notes to the Roger Williams Zoomobile for visiting with a box turtle, a lizard, and a really long snake. The snake was not a well received visit to our classroom. You never know when a mishap occurs in our classroom.
