Finding a good book is a challenge for anyone. But finding enough good books for some voracious first graders has been a special challenge for me.
I began teaching last year within a public school program for gifted students.
I teach first grade and my students reading abilities range from about grade 2 to grade 5+, and they love to read! If I would let them they would read and be read to all day long. You can often find them hidden away in the library during recess, or with their nose in a book as they walk down the hall. I have constantly struggled with finding them enough texts that are intellectually challenging yet not inappropriate for their age. Any new book I do bring in is quickly consumed and passed along to the next person waiting.
My Project
I have selected some wonderful school classics and soon to be classics. Clementine is a fabulous character that my first graders can relate to so well. Encyclopedia Brown hunts for clues and engages my students in his wonderful capers. And Percy Jackson is a newer series that is on my kids must read list.
Your funding of this project would bring some wonderfully challenging and yet appropriate books to my class of avid, and ravenous readers.
They will get so much excitement out of the new books. And the books will help to strengthen my library for years to come, so that each crop of students has enough books to read and be challenged by.
