Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

M., who is in charge of the project, is a sophomore with lofty aspirations. She and the rest of the students are part of a high school that is in a Middle college program. This means that their campus is on a community college, they take college classes concurrently with their high school classes, and they have the opportunity to earn their AA degree along with their diploma. They are an extremely bright, highly motivated, talented group, who come from a lower SES background.

Mya started the volleyball club because our school does not have a girls' or a boys' volleyball team or equipment and she wanted to get the administration to officially start the sport for our school.

Through this project, the students will be able to develop skills such as teamwork, determination, and fundraising. The students will not only get to develop skills and be able to play volleyball with others, but they will also need to develop skills in persevering when roadblocks come up, and develop skills in planning, organizing, and raising funds for all of the things we will need to play.

My Project

We are trying to start a volleyball club at our school. We are trying to get the necessary equipment to learn volleyball skills and to develop teamwork. We will also need to do a lot of other fundraising to get the money for all of the equipment we will need. Hopefully, this will show the administration that there is enough interest to start a fully fledged volleyball team.

We will make the most of this leadership opportunity by practicing all types of leadership skills.

We will get to practice delegation by giving tasks to people and making sure they get their job done. We will have to practice fundraising skills by finding and/or thinking up various ways we can raise funds. We will get to practice organizational skills by getting all of the participants to come regularly, by getting all of our fundraising materials and dates and things like that. We will have to practice initiative by approaching staff and students who would be interested in helping/joining.

If we get this project funded, we will be able to have volleyballs to practice with, and other equipment that would be used in order play volleyball like a scorekeeper and a volleyball cart.
