Volleyball Program Needs Equipment - No Budget

My students desperately need items to help support our volleyball program: balls, ball carts, and equipment holders.

My Students

4 years ago when I came to my new school there was not a volleyball program for the girls. Boys had different after school sports and the girls did not. When the team was finally approved we did not have budget or appropriate nets. The balls were not the standard balls that we should use.

The girls range from a diverse background.

We have many girls who participate in the program and some that need this. It helps maintain their grades (Required GPA to play), gives them a healthy lifestyle (Some of them need), reinforce discipline (Following directions), teamwork, and behaving in the classroom. As a coach and a teacher in the school I have high expectations for the girls and I work with teachers to make sure they are doing their part in the classroom first before playing on the court. Our school is in an area of low economic status. Our district has a high percentage of free and reduced price lunch students. Since the program is after school we use a majority of the PE equipment since there is not a budget for supplies. The other middle schools in the district were built three years ago and were supplied with the proper materials for their PE department and after school sport programs.

My Project

We balls, ball carts, and equipment holders. My volleyball girls will use this equipment to learn basic to advanced levels of volleyball skills. The program will help them build many valuable skills for the future, from discipline to teamwork. The girls will get exercise they need but which some girls don't get to lead a healthy lifestyle and this will help them in the area of fitness. We will also build a rapport with the girls as a mentor and coach. We will help support them in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Our program helps our kids to be successful by having the structure and support of the program. Most of our kids go home to an empty households. We have lots of single parents who work long hours. This gives them an opportunity to stay out of trouble, be social, and make positive choices throughout this structured time.

The donations to our program will help our girls by giving them an even playing field with our other five middle schools in our league.

They will have the correct equipment which will be equal to what the other schools use. The balls we currently use are old and light weight PE volleyballs. When we play against the other schools we use the standard volleyballs. This puts us at a disadvantage. Other schools provide uniforms and our girls pay for them. Again a disadvantage for our school.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
