Please help support our first graders in developing their self esteem and improving their coordination skills. I would love to teach my class how to play volleyball! Help get kids off their electronic devices and into the gym! You can make a positive difference in the lives of young children!
My first grade students are mostly children who have not experienced many sports activities.
They live in a big urban city in California and attend a public school. Many come from backgrounds where parents cannot afford to pay for their children to learn new sports. Many of these parents themselves have little time to teach their children to catch a ball or shoot a basketball or hit a volleyball. These kids may not own a volleyball, basketball or baseball glove.
My Project
Volleyball has been a part of my life since I was young. I still play regularly and would love to teach my students the joy of this team sport. I was inspired as I watched my daughter who has just completed first grade, take a volleyball class from the same coach who taught me when I was a youth. I was able to help out and got learn more of how teach volleyball to kids. There are now innovative volleyballs made just for young beginners! They are lighter than standard volleyballs so kids can play with them without getting sore arms. I thought that maybe I could teach the first graders in my own classroom during PE. Not only would my students learn volleyball skills but they would also develop teamwork and good sportsmanship. Playing volleyball could also open them up to new opportunities that they might not have otherwise. I am hoping for 12 indoor volleyballs so kids can practice in pairs, 2 outdoor balls to play on a grassy field, 2 bags to hold the balls and a few whistles.
If you have ever played volleyball or any other team sport, you probably know the exhilarating feeling you have when you play and can identify with how sports can build up a person's self esteem.
