I teach at a Title I school in Louisville, Kentucky, where all 600+ students receive breakfast and lunch at no cost, and 50+ are provided with backpacks filled with food for the weekends. My school is located in the Russell Neighborhood of Louisville, where the median annual household income is $14,457 (220% lower than the city of Louisville as a whole), 58% of the population lives below the federal poverty level (including 3,000 children, 78% of total population under 18 years of age), and the unemployment rate is north of 30%.
Far too many of my students enter school from a playing field that is far from level, where food and shelter are not to be taken for granted, freedom from violence is rarely guaranteed, and the priorities of studying and homework take a backseat to daily survival.
For our students, school is more than a place to learn. It's a safe place of stability and routine, where they can expect warm meals, careful attention, and encouraging words.
Our kids and families are amazingly resilient. Our students want to do well, and strive for success when most others would give in. For our work, they're all the inspiration we need.
I am starting a FREE after-school volleyball team for our 4th and 5th grade girls. This is the first year for volleyball at our school, so we need a lot of equipment. We're borrowing standards and nets from another local school, but we can't practice without volleyballs, and the knee pads would help our beginning players give their all and enjoy the game.
We have twenty girls fired up and ready to go, and with your donations of volleyballs and knee pads, our team will be fierce (their words).
Volleyball leagues, especially at the elementary school level, are uncommon in Louisville's west end, so all of our players are new to the sport. Although we have very little funding to support after-school activities, we're determined to make this team FREE for our girls because we know how valuable the experience will be, and what could result from opportunities like this for our students.
