Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of my ninth-grade students come from diverse backgrounds and walk through difficult neighborhoods just to get to school each day. They carry stories of their own struggles, challenges, and hopes for a better future. One of the most powerful ways to connect students to the world and to one another is through stories, especially those that reflect real cultural experiences and struggles. Graphic novels have become an engaging, accessible format that my students truly enjoy. I want to provide them with titles that not only capture their attention but also help them see the realities different communities face around the world.
Graphic novels that explore cultural challenges and social justice topics give students an opportunity to walk in someone else’s shoes.
Through vivid illustrations and relatable characters, these books can introduce students to issues like immigration, racism, poverty, gender inequality, war, and resilience. Titles like When Stars Are Scattered, They Called Us Enemy, and American Born Chinese, offer powerful, age-appropriate windows into cultural experiences that students might not learn about in traditional textbooks. These stories help foster empathy, broaden worldviews, and create conversations about identity, history, and human rights — conversations that are so important for young people growing up in today’s world.
By adding these graphic novels to our school library, I hope to create a safe, engaging space where students not only improve their literacy skills, but also find connections to characters who overcome adversity. Reading these books can spark meaningful discussions, inspire personal reflection, and encourage students to think critically about the world around them. With your help, we can provide stories that both reflect our students' lives and expand their understanding of global struggles, promoting kindness, resilience, and hope.
