My Project

I provide speech-language therapy for autistic children who are either nonverbal or have limited verbalizations. The use of voice output devices are key to allow the children a way to communicate with their peers and teachers. The children have benefited from having access to single-message devices to greet others and have begun to do so independently. Due to damage, our current "talkers" are unreliable and are glitching.

The AbleNet LITTLEmack Single Message Dedicated Speech Generating Device, Portable AAC Communication Device for Non-Verbal Speech Therapy will be used to promote the communication skills of the autistic students with whom I work.

The devices will allow the children to spontaneously greet others and participate in classroom activities. For example, during snack the children can indicate if they like something or if they want more of something (e.g., "yes/no").

Having a voice empowers my students and encourages them to continue to increase their communication.
