Vocational Foods Class Seeking Hotdog Roller for ASD Students

Help me give my students the opportunity to expand food service offerings in our ASD vocational foods classroom. Students work on money skills and safe food preparation. Proceeds from food sales benefit our ASD program.

My Project

We are Mixter SNACC Team, part of a transition program for young adults on the Autism Spectrum. Our class makes the most amazing cookies which are a huge hit with staff, students, families and our community. We also make delicious soups. We would like to expand our vocational foods class to include some convenient lunch options for students and staff. A hotdog roller would give our students further opportunities to practice food safety and money skills within our kitchen classroom. All proceeds from selling hotdogs benefit our ASD program and would help pay for community-based instruction opportunities and classroom materials.

Our classroom kitchen was recently converted from a regular classroom to a kitchen workspace through donations and grant money.

We recently were able to install electrical components to accommodate our appliances. We now have a new stove, refrigerator, countertops, and a sink, as well as new KitchenAid mixers for making cookie dough. Having everything in one room has been a game-changer for us! Until recently, we were using an oven, refrigerators, and sinks on opposite ends of the building.

In addition to our cooking classroom, Mixter School also has a garden and farm stand where students sell produce and hand-made items. We have a podcast room where students can interview and engage with local people of interest, and a construction room where students learn basic home maintenance and carpentry skills. We also have a student-run thrift store. Additionally, many of our students are taught vocational skills at a variety of local businesses in our community.

I absolutely love working at Mixter School which is home to around 80 young adult students with Autism and around 40 dedicated special educators, paraprofessionals, administrators and ancillary staff. It is truly a family. I hope someone can help us out with a classroom donation!
