Thank you SONIC! As a teacher and the K-5 Math Leader in a Title I elementary school, I often times notice that our students are not exposed to science outside of the classroom. Over seventy percent of our campus receives free or reduced-price lunch and often times, we have students who are not capable of even having their parents supply their own school supplies.
Our school is located in an area that was hit and affected by Hurricane Harvey, but our students are actively coming to school eager to learn.
In my classroom, I work hard to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable environment for learning and seek ways to make learning innovative. We have created a culture on our campus where our students actually look forward to the bus pulling up at their houses in the morning to bring them to school.
These kids will take advantage of any learning opportunity that is brought their way. Our motto at our campus is reach for the stars and our students do their best to reach beyond them.
Our school has a standardized dress code but our students can wear clothing related to academics. For my lower students, let's start a t-shirt club where they design t-shirts based on vocabulary and academics and wear them around campus for others to see. This is a not for profit project, all t-shirts designed will be free for the kids who need them. Every week I would like to see more and more kids interested in having vocabulary t-shirts made.
This is an innovative way to get kids excited about learning and vocabulary.
The more the students see words and academics they struggle with the better they will become with using it.
What we need is a Cricut air, a heat transfer machine, and vinyl. These items will be used to cut and press the materials on the t-shirts. We will also need the individual pieces that go with the Cricut. For safety, the teachers will be using the machinery but the designs and innovation will be coming from our students!
This is the start of a new trend I would like to set across the state of Texas. Since our children can't wear name brand clothes to school, let's start the trend of wearing academics to school!
