Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On average children living in poverty hear fewer than a third of the words heard by children from higher-income families . When extrapolated to the words heard by a child within the first four years of their life these results reveal a 30 million word difference. (Hart, B. & Risley, T.R.)
The majority of the students in my urban district school receive free or reduced lunch and are considered to be living in poverty.
The majority are first or second generation immigrants whose first language is not English. Due to these adversities, they lack the resources to develop their reading skills at home and their vocabulary knowledge is far below grade level. Each of these children, however, has a genuine desire to learn.
My Project
Small group, partner and individual games enable students to manipulate words and provide exposure to vocabulary in a fun and exciting way. Many of my students are struggling readers and need small group support through guided reading. With 29 students in a classroom, it can be difficult to find the time to closely monitor each child's strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing. In order to work with students in small groups, the remaining students need engaging activities that are fun and independent. The materials I am requesting will be a great supplement to the curriculum, keeping children engaged and learning while working in small groups.
My students need intensive vocabulary and reading support.
These interactive, self correcting games and activities will give them the exposure they need to further their learning. In addition, they will allow me to work more intensively on reading groups and focus intervention where it is needed.
