The majority of the students in my urban district school receive free or reduced lunch. The majority are first or second generation immigrants whose first language is not English. Organization and structure is lacking at home. Ten percent of the class are living in homeless shelters. Even more are living with other families in one room of an apartment. We are continually working on responsible habits and organizational skills. Often time instructional time is lost while waiting for students to find needed materials for the lesson. Disorganization exasperates the existing learning and/or attention difficulties in many students.
