Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students are a diverse group who are excited by challenges but are cautious of new situations. They come from different backgrounds and have limited experiences in real-world applications of science and engineering. They have great ideas but are unsure about how to use those ideas to solve problems.
My students are eager to direct their learning and share their knowledge with others but have limited opportunities to use scientific equipment to engage in real-world STEM experiences.
Using the tools of scientists and engineers allows my students to see themselves in STEM careers in their futures. Creating real-world, meaningful learning opportunities that students can engage in, while also sharing the experiences with their families, is important to not only their intellectual growth but also for their emotional and social growth.
My Project
Science lessons come to life when they have meaning for my students. Learning how their body systems work will be much easier when students can hear their heartbeat and measure their vital signs. Students can then design experiments involving exercise, music, or food to evaluate the effects of changing those variables on their heart rate and blood pressure.
The stethoscopes and blood pressure monitors will provide my students with data about themselves and introduce them to health careers and, hopefully, healthier lifestyle choices.
Using the data collected from the experiments will also provide me with opportunities to teach data analysis and graphing. Overall, I envision using the equipment over several months as students learn about health, biology, and experimental design.
