Visualizing the Unseeable World Around Us

My students need a working microscope in order to better visualize and understand cell biology and the world of microbes. One able to hook up to the computer will allow everyone to view at once.

My Students

My students are older teens and adults who are seeking a CORE 40 diploma on limited resources such as homelessness or food insecurity. Many of my students are returning to high school after an extended time away or after a major life change. I have one student who is returning to school after having two children and needs her diploma in order to earn a better income. Many of my students benefit enormously from hands on learning experiences and from seeing the world of science up "close and personal."

Our school is a non-traditional high school in that we have an in building daycare as well as life coaches to help encourage students.

My Project

Most of my students do not have access to learning technology. Coming to school to learn how to effectively use pieces of technology, that the workforce is increasingly requiring, is important. While internet photos are highly accessible they are less engaging than being able to search and locate a small cell on multiple magnifications themselves.

In biology class, microscopes are considered a staple piece of equipment.

A microscope that can connect to the main computer in the classroom will allow me, as the teacher, to demonstrate techniques and processes necessary to use the equipment. Additionally a student project that we currently conduct is to "test the school for microbes" and grow the microbes on an agar plate. We can currently only grow them and observe the growth of a bacterial colony with the naked eye. The students would be able to utilize this microscope to enhance this project by allowing them to fix a sample to a microscope slide and view it to compare samples with each other.

Another lesson where a microscope can enhance the learning process is in the observation of the stages of the cell cycle. The understanding of the cell cycle and growth has many real life applications such as the understanding of child development and cancer progression.

We do not charge our students any fees to attend our school, which is a wonderful form of barrier removal for them. However, that means there are no technology fees to pull from for the purchasing of equipment. While nearly any topic can be taught without access to advanced equipment, all topics can benefit greatly from its inclusion.
