Help me give my students the novel, "White Bird" by R.J. Palacio which helps them learn about the Holocaust and the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges, and even save lives.
I teach fifth grade at a Title I school in Florida. My students come from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are a diverse and unique bunch. Each day, we strive to do the very best we can. We are a Title I school and the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
My classroom is a place where my students learn that they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
Many of my students come from low income homes, and this can negatively affect their ability to learn successfully. My students come to school wanting to learn and with a positive attitude about school no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard workers who want to do good things with their lives, and they know it starts here in the classroom.
My Project
As fifth graders, many of my students know nothing of the atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II. I am mandated to teach them about the Holocaust through literature. Today's students love graphic novels to lead them to different times and places.
The graphic novel "White Bird" by RJ Palacio embraces the power of kindness to change hearts and save lives during a time when kindness could cost a person everything!
My students become familiar with the history of the Holocaust and how people such as themselves sacrificed to help those that were being persecuted by the Nazis throughout Europe.
