My students are unique because they come from various diverse backgrounds. We come together as a classroom community that supports and looks to one another with respect, compassion, and understanding.
Having various types of learners is an awesome learning experience because each individual brings a new outlook to understanding, interpretation, and new ways of thinking.
This helps the entire class be more open to expanding their minds to different ways of thinking in terms of understanding and being engaged through books.
My Project
My students are working towards building their reading comprehension and advancing their reading levels. Unfortunately, many of the library books and classroom books are too challenging for many of them. As a result, students speed read, and do not fully absorb or grasp what's going on in their books.
When reading graphic novels, students slow down and look at the images and text to fully understand what's happening in the story.
These graphic novels will help me work with my students in a more engaging and fundamental way. Research has shown that with graphic novels, students use text and images to make inferences and synthesize information, both of which are abstract and challenging skills for readers. I want to make reading more accessible and enjoyable for all students.
