My high school reflects the diversity of the city of Lowell where it is located with 11% African American, 32% Asian, 25% Hispanic and 29% White students. Unlike most other high schools in the nation, the high school was an integrated school from its’ first opening in 1831 and was the first co-educational high school in the nation and continues to be today. Over three thousand student attend this diverse inner city school where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch due to students overall being low income. A significant number of students are recent immigrants and are English as a second language learner’s (ELL’s).
My students work cooperatively in groups to make sense of science by having materials that they can manipulate and materials that help them visualize science.
My Project
Students can draw on the cardstock to visualize the structure and function of organic molecules (macromolecules) and the foods they are found in. They could use the colored tape and other building materials to make a 3D representation of chemistry.
Students will have the opportunity to build models of different macromolecules like carbohydrates, lipids and proteins to visualize their structure and their nutrition.
This enables them to interact with chemistry and models. Students will make sense of science doing a macromolecule mystery lab. Students can then share the clues in our mystery macromolecule lab using the large post it boards.
