My students are being taught to be a very independent group of learners with the assistance from myself. This requires that they be able to use resources with minimal assistance in order to reinforce material that I have taught. They are very kinesthetic and hands on learners. Plus, I have many artistic students every year that are limited in the way that they can practice their skills, even minor ones. The access to certain supplies would help develop those artistic skills as well as mathematic.
The group of students in my classroom live in a very rural setting up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
We lack some of the basic supplies that many other schools have due to the economic status of the County. All of our students have free and reduced lunch due to our economics. I provide a snack daily so that I know my students have full stomachs and are able to focus on the work until we have lunch.
A carpet is a nessessity in any elementary classroom because of the diverse seating options it provides as well as the learning that can occur from studying the information woven into it. This will help me teach Social Studies by being a resource and will help provide seating for my 56 students during our group Math portion of our day.
Currently our classroom is quite bland as most of the supplies are back from the 1970’s and is not as welcoming as it could be due to the old dated surroundings: however, the carpet will help with the student engagement during lessons, provide an additional resources, and bring some visual warmth to our classroom.
Plus, it provides us in 5th grade a great resource that can help to be cross cutting for all major subjects (Science, Social Studies, English, as well as Math).
