My students need access to visual mathematics through programs like Desmos, Geogebra, and Book Creator. With Chromebooks available in our classroom, students can interpret the language of mathematics using this eye-opening technology.
My students work hard every day to lay mathematical foundations that will be the building blocks of their future. Every step they take toward understanding concepts in math will move them closer to their goals of high school graduation, college, and challenging careers.
My students are hard-working 7th and 8th graders in a rural school.
Some do not have access to technology or the internet at home. Our rural community is not wealthy, and many students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The students are just beginning to explore complex mathematics such as pre-algebra, and their success depends on experiencing the concepts in as many different ways as possible—especially in visual ways.
My Project
Students will use the Chromebooks to access programs such as Desmos, an online graphing system. There they can view dynamic examples, try their hands at graphing algebraic equations, and play games designed to increase math vocabulary and knowledge.
Visual math opens the eyes of the learner to see what was once hidden.
Other programs such as Geogebra and Book Creator offer the opportunity to create online 3D models of concepts such as area, volume, and linear equations. Students learn best when they create their own visual examples and view the examples of others. The Chromebooks will provide meaningful learning experiences for all!
We raised money for three Chromebooks earlier this year, and I added two more using my own money. Please help us bring our total up to 10 so that we can do partner activities in class using this resource!
