As a fifth grade teacher of 10 years, I've taught in a variety of classroom settings. Presently, I am honored to teach a group of students that are enthusiastic and eager to learn. Our school's neighborhood classifies as high poverty which qualifies 100% of our students for free lunch. This year alone, my students have dealt with more challenges and traumatic situations than I've recognized in the past. Because of this, we've created a classroom environment that is safe and open. In recognizing their financial limitations, my goal has been to provide enriching instruction that allows them to explore activities and ideas that they may not have previously had access to.
With this, I've focused on incorporating STEAM activities such as computer coding, video presentations, movie shorts, and virtual field trips to pair with the science and language arts curriculum.
Since incorporating STEM activities, my students are excited to see what experience every day will bring.
Creating an authentic presentation space, with real-world equipment gives students experience and builds confidence. Exposing students to equipment, situations, and responsibilities that exist in the positions to which they aspire validates their desire to grow in a field.
Putting modernized devices in their hands provides experiences that enhance their learning, build experiences, and cultivate their talents, resulting in the honing of needed skills.
Having the Apple pens will help enhance their digital story-telling, scientific diagrams of labs and materials, and creative additions to their annotations. The addition Apple TV will allow the comfort of presenting their projects from anywhere in their learning space. Having the opportunity to move around while discussing their work reduces the nervousness that arises when giving presentations.
