My students need beads, string, popcorn, tablecloths, aprons, Post-Its, face paint, stamps, and cash registers to turn our third grade classrooms into a small community.
"Economics is everywhere, and understanding economics can help you make better decisions and lead a happier life." - Tyler Cowen
We have 92 students in 3rd grade.
They are lively and willing to try and learn new things. Each has a different personality and a different story. We are over 50% free and reduced lunch. Every year we host an Econ fair and each year we hope to make it even better and an even greater learning experience. Our district is currently working out our budget and money needs to be used in other key areas. We want to continue to provide these learning opportunities to our students and want to use Donors Choose for this. We are so grateful for every donation we get.
My Project
For two months we will talk about our community and our local businesses, then for two weeks we will talk about economy. We will discuss, write, and read about supply and demand, money, factories, and businesses. As a finale we would like to hold an Econ Fair. Each of our five classrooms would hold a different business. Students earn coins based on tasks completed at home and at school.
In our first classroom students would take orders and make s'mores. In our second classroom, students would create keychain shapes using beads and string. The next classroom would be a bowling alley via Nintendo Wii. Students would also get popcorn to eat. The next classroom would do face paint from a variety of designs. Our last classroom would create name necklaces. Students would order as they entered. We would have both goods and services in all classrooms. Our third grade community would turn into a city with a jewelry store, bowling alley, restaurant, souvenir shop, and a spa.
Think about all the learning that will go on during this experience?
Students will master financial literacy, compute math, learn social skills, make a plan for earning and spending coins, design key chains and necklaces, art, how to work with food, note taking, taking turns, and the list could go on. This Econ Fair will make such a huge impact on each student.
