Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title One, STEAM Academy School with minority students that come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and/or immigrant families.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and have diverse academic needs that go beyond the school day.
Because my students have such diverse academic needs, it's imperative that they are offered a variety of learning opportunities and experiences that foster motivation, interest, confidence and engagement. I know that engaging my students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) projects will offer the diverse learning opportunities my students need.
My Project
"The One and Only Ivan", by Katherine Applegate is the beautiful story of a friendship between a gorilla and an elephant, and a promise to provide a better home than their shopping mall cage; too small for anyone to call home.
We have the the novel sets and 1 Oculus Go, however, I have 26 students and it would be helpful to have another Oculus Go Virtual Reality Headset so that my students can learn about the need for healthy animal habitats and improved animal welfare in a small group setting.
This Oculus Go will help us research and explore virtual animal habitats with Google Expeditions, and will help us develop our own models of healthy animal habitats through various hands-on STEAM projects.
