Virtually Doing Anything to Help My Students Read!

I need to attend a 30 hour virtual training opportunity to expand my knowledge of multi-sensory strategies in order to best teach all learners to read.

My Students

I have the privilege of working with striving readers from Kindergarten through 6th grade. I am a reading specialist in a school-wide Title I building serving 488 students. As a reading specialist, I work with both students in need of support and with classroom teachers to help children develop important reading and writing skills. At this unusual time, building on students' strengths and using multi-sensory education will be critical for success. This year I have taken on a special role, and will teach 3-5th grades online.

I want to continue to grow as an educator and specialist, so that I can be the best possible reading teacher and literacy leader for the nearly 500 students I can impact each school year.

I typically directly serve 25-40 students each year who may be experiencing reading difficulties. I also have an indirect impact on many more students by providing current research findings and instructional coaching for my teaching colleagues to promote best literacy practices school-wide.

My Project

I've been hoping to attend IMSE's Orton-Gillingham training. Unfortunately, travel time and costs have been a barrier. At this time, this valuable training is now being offered virtually, which would allow me the opportunity to attend without the added costs of travel and lodging, and time away from my own children.

I will learn research-based, multi-sensory strategies to help all students read!

While I am connecting with students online, and when I eventually return to the classroom, I know that I will use these techniques to better support aspiring readers. Children are needing to make up for some of the interruptions in learning due to COVID-19, so I am especially excited to have this opportunity to grow myself as a specialist at this critical time.
