Virtual Reality Engagement

My Students

My students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. The demographics of my school includes Asian, African American, Latino and Caucasian students. One goal, as a school community, is to focus on the whole child. My classroom is dedicated to tolerance and humanitarianism. I focus my lessons on the human experience to instill empathy into my students in hopes to create a better world for their generation and generations after. We utilize a vast range of texts, sources, and technology that is available to further understand our world and the responsibilities of a citizen of the United States. I want my students to continue to ask deeper questions about their world, analyze perspectives of others, and be able to support their ideas with evidence.

My Project

Our students spend a tremendous amount of time using computers, consoles, tablets, and phones. In a technological savvy world, they need to be able to utilize as many different mediums as possible to keep up with the rest of the world. The Oculus headset will provide students with a virtual reality experience that many of them only dream about using.

With the Oculus, students will be transported to new environments, work on their team building, and explore worlds that they have only dreamt about.

Students will be able to explore specific areas of the world in 3D and actually be able to put themselves in the shoes of an explorer. They will be able to view works of art, interact with 360 degree news content, play cooperative games that require good communication skills, and use our online textbook's 360 Experience. The headset can also be used as an incentive for positive behavior since it's so engaging.

The best learning of social studies and being invested in the world is first person experience and with this headset, students are integrated into the entire world.
