I work in a middle school in Brooklyn, New York. "Diverse" is definitely a word we would use to describe our 6th and 7th grade ELA student population. Our students come from all corners of the district and have families with cultures that originate from and span all corners of the globe. Among our students, you will find children representing households of all socioeconomic statuses, religions, family dynamics and races.
"Passionate" is another word we would use to describe our students.
They are brilliant minds fueled by brilliant experiences, books, authors, and characters. They love to hear stories and discuss books. Watching students achieve to their highest potential as readers and thinkers is one of my greatest joys as a teacher. In my opinion, fluent, voluminous reading is the fundamental gateway to success.
My Project
Virtual learning is difficult. Not only does it require enormous efforts on the part of students to catch up to a world of technology that is often above their heads, but it takes perseverance, patience, and grit. It can also be a lonely experience, as students attempt to fly solo without enough social interaction and community building.
We would like to take our students on a virtual trip to Mars through The Challenger Center.
On this trip, students will be given a virtual mission, mission roles, and they will work together to make important scientific decisions that could affect the future development of colonies in space! They will soar through the solar system and finally get the trip they've always dreamed of - and they'll be connecting with one another, too.
