Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dance is a form of expression, an art that helps you move through emotions and ideas. It allows us to interpret, communicate and relate through movement. Dance is a space where perspectives can be expressed and changed in real time and it connects us to one another.

I have the honor of teaching dance at an arts focused middle school.

In our classes, my students share their successes, fears, hardships and joys. We physically move through them collaboratively, supporting each other through expression, connection, creation and reflection. This has been vital for my students during the timespan of the pandemic. My students have had a lot of experiences during this time that sometimes they can not find words to express. Dance and movement are wonderful ways to move through these non verbalized emotions.

A significant part of dance is performing for others. It has been reported that it is the favorite part of my class for students. Performing creates learning on all levels. It creates collaboration and sense of community. It allows us to share our thoughts, feelings and creations with others. During the pandemic, live performances have been canceled. So, we are left to perform virtually.

My Project

With access to an ultra wide camera lens, we will be able to successfully capture my students' choreography and performances. Additionally, the video editing software on IPADS will allow us to put together a show and share it with our community virtually.

A highlight of my students' learning are the performances they get to put together and work towards.

This tool will help us continue with performances virtually. It will also help us reflect on our movement and creations as we progress. Critically reviewing oneself on video is a priceless tool for improvement.
