This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are dynamic, multilingual students who demonstrate a real passion for music. Our school is located in Corona, Queens a high-immigrant, low-income community where 90% of students are Latinx and almost 50% of our students are classified as English Language Learners. At PS 14, we believe that the arts are key to fostering language, learning, and creativity.
Music taps into their rich cultural assets, providing a bridge between their many ways of knowing, and the rigors of the school curriculum.
Students demonstrate real ownership over their learning and a real zeal for learning the violin- they come to class excited to make music. They take their instruments home to practice what was learned in the classroom and look up new music to learn on their own. They look forward to mentoring newer violin students and putting on several performances throughout the school year for their peers.
The reality is that we do not even have enough violins for students on our current roster and for our roster to grow. An additional ten violins would enable us to put a working violin in each student's hand. A previous DonorsChoose project will grant us five additional violins. We are in need of at least five more violins so that each student on our roster has a violin to practice.
The eight hard cases requested are for students that have working violins but soft cases are over a decade old & very worn- zippers are snagged/broken and the inside lining is detached, exposing the styrofoam interior.
Our students cannot afford to purchase or rent instruments for the school year and rely on our school to loan them instruments so it is imperative that our older violins are replaced so that the students on our roster have access to a working instrument.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
