Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are dynamic, multilingual students who demonstrate a real passion for music. Our school is located in Corona, Queens a high-immigrant, low-income community where 90% of students are Latinx and almost 50% of our students are classified as English Language Learners. At PS 14, we believe that the arts are key to fostering language, learning, and creativity.
Music taps into their rich cultural assets, providing a bridge between their many ways of knowing, and the rigors of school curriculum.
We offer violin lessons during lunchtime and after school to fourth and fifth-grade students. Students demonstrate real ownership over their learning- they take their instruments home to practice and take great care of their instruments. They mentor newer violin students and put on several leadership performances throughout the school year for their peers.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to purchase new instruments since the start of the pandemic and several of our instruments fell into disrepair, and need to be replaced. Students cannot afford to purchase or rent instruments and rely on our school to loan them instruments so it is imperative that these instruments are replaced so that all our students in the program can continue learning to play the violin.
